'Cafe Intermezzo Boasts Atlanta’s Best European Cakes & Coffee'

Cafe Intermezzo, which means a “café intermission” from the daily grind, was inspired in 1971 when the founder traveled to his home country of Germany. He discovered an abundance of quaint bakeries, also known as “Konditorei,” as well as the traditional “Europäische Kaffeehaus,” or European Coffeehouse. Europeans use these places as an escape, and Cafe Intermezzo has been designed with the same idea in mind.

The interior mimics the intricate detail you’d find in a classic kaffeehaus; a carved wooden bar and wall panels, candlelight and dimmed fixtures, rich fabrics and golden accents. The restrooms are just as lavish with checkered tile and art. Each booth or table is elegant and cozy with sugar cubes and cream for coffee.

Name a coffee drink, and they have it. A variety of international blends will shake up the most prominent coffee drinker’s routine. It’s exciting to browse the warm concoctions that are made with ingredients like honey, amaretto, brandy, frothed cream and spices. Although, a basic latte is the best way to taste the coffee’s complex oils and flavors.

The first thing you’ll notice in the 19th century style restaurant is the cake display that stretches around the front counter and coffee bar. Dozens of delicious pies and desserts line the shelves, and an attendant is waiting to assist you in picking the perfect one. Caramel, coconut, berry and chocolate cakes as well as Oreo, strawberry and traditional cheesecakes, and an amazing berry tart overflowing with blackberries, blueberries and currants are just the tip of the iceberg. Once you pick your slice, you’ll be handed a ticket to give your waiter, or “Tour Guide” as the restaurant likes to call them. Just a warning, each slice is enormous.

Cafe Intermezzo’s bar has gained much popularity, and one could even say their cocktails and wine selections rival their coffee. But why not have the best of both worlds and select a coffee spiked with liquor?

While the cafe is centered around coffee and over 70 amazing pastries, a full menu offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Charcuterie boards, salads, crostini, sandwiches, sweet or savory crepes and other hors d’oeuvres complete the classic European menu.

There are a few locations in the Atlanta area; Dunwoody, Alpharetta, Midtown near Piedmont Park, and the Atlanta International Airport in terminal B. Whichever one you decide to go to, it truly is an escape with an incredibly relaxing atmosphere, true to a real Europäische Kaffeehaus.
